Electric Motor Use Warning Items

As an engineer of electric motor factory, I want to write something and share with customers and friends after so many years of after-sales service and product improvement. We will share series of articles about product warning items and use suggestions. This article is written from an engineering person’s vision and in the hope it can help you at some points.

The climate gradually warms up and the rain increases, so the temperature difference between day and night increases and the air is moister than winter days. I couldn’t help worrying our customers’ equipment will become ‘wet’ due to the climate change. In the past, some customers met a kind of problem that the motor stator was damaged because of the motor water inlet short circuit. For this problem, we improved the motor structure and technology. When used in water, a waterproof structure is chosen. Even if the environment is dry, a waterproof technology will be added at motor key locations. Waterproof performance has already become the basic performance of our factory’s motors.

I would like to remind our customers and friends that the motor waterproof structure cannot completely replace the waterproof protection during use. After all, electrical products are afraid of water. So we remind you to pay attention to the following points when using motors.

1）   Try to install the electrical equipment indoors to avoid rain.   

2）   Where there is water in the working environment, such as the need of using coolant, a waterproof cover must be added to the motor to prevent water directly splashing on the motor.

3）   For the use safety, the electrical equipment which voltage is higher than 36VDC should be grounded.

4）   This point is often been overlooked. That is the wires outlet position must be installed downwards when installing the motor. Because when the equipment is in operation, the surface of the motor will become hot and the equipment will return to a cold state when it stops working. In the alternating process of cooling and heating, the surface of the equipment and motor will form water condensation. At this time, it is necessary to prevent condensation water flowing along the cable and slowly permeating into motor to cause short circuit. Even in a working environment without water, water condensation should also be prevented due to humid weather.

5）   If your equipment will be possibly affected by moisture, please remember to tell the manufacturer to select waterproof motor. The manufacturer will determine the waterproof grade according to your use requirements to produce the corresponding waterproof motor.
