2 Phase? 3 Phase? 220V? 380V? The Misapprehensions of Stepper Motor Model Selection

Recently, Some customers who have just touched stepper motor(stepping motor) or who are ready to use stepper motors will ask us how to select a stepper motor or what parameters they need to provide. Even that they feel confused when meeting problems at stepping motor model selection. Today I would like to share the main misapprehensions in stepper motor model selection and help customers to better know stepping motor selection.

1, The Misapprehensions between 2-phase stepping motor, 3-phase stepping motor and 2-phase voltage 220V, 3-phase voltage 380V

According to the internal structure difference, it can be divided into 2-phase stepping motor, 3-phase stepper motor, 5-phase stepper motor. Owing to the high cost of 5-phase stepper motor, it rarely appears on the market. So two-phase stepper motor and three-phase stepper motor are commonly used. Many customers who have just stepped into stepper motor always misunderstand that the two phase stepper motor is 220V power supply and three phase stepper motor is 380V power supply. Actually it's wrong. The two phase stepper motor three phase stepper motor is named and differentiate according to the stepper motor internal structural pole of pairs, which has no relationship to 220V and 380V power supply.

2, The Misapprehensions of stepper motor power supply

The stepper motor is used as control motor instead of drive motor, the biggest difference to drive motor is that the motor receives pulse signal to produce rotary motion. The stepper motor rotor's rotation speed and angle depend on the sending speed and quantity of pulse signal to achieve the control of speed and displacement. If normal operation is required, the stepper motor must be used simultaneously with stepper motor driver and the pulse sending controller, rather than directly connected to the power supply. The output cable is directly connected to stepper motor driver. The power supply voltage means the power supply voltage to driver. Many customers would like to use 220V voltage to supply power because it is very convenient, but not all stepper motor can realize this. Normally, our 3 phase big power 110 series stepper motor and the matched driver CF30522M, CF31022M and etc. can directly connected with 220V power. And the other small power stepper motor driver should be matched a switching power supply or a transformer.

3, The misapprehension of stepping motor naming

At present, there are various of ways to name the stepper motor, without a unified standard. The factories name the stepper motors by their own ways. So we meet a problem that some customers always ask us whether we have xx model stepper motor. Actually, different factories name the same stepper motor at different ways. As long as we get the key parameters such as the stepper motor's flange length, holding torque and the step angle is basically determined the motor type that customer needed. If more information such as knowing the stepper motor shaft diameter, shaft elongation, shaft connection way( includes optical shaft, spline shaft and platform shaft), the positioning stop diameter of flange, flange installation hole diameter and the center distance, then we can decide the right motor buyer wanted soon. To expert users, it's better to make sure the following requirements such as the stepper motor working speed range and the required torque or the key speed point load ability for that stepper motor manufacturer can optimize the internal parameters of the stepper motor to achieve better product performance.
