The Difference Between Holding Torque and Detent Torque

Stepper motor is an open-loop control actuator that converts electric pulse signal into angular displacement or linear displacement. In normal operation of the motor, the speed and size of displacement depend on the pulse signals' sending frequency and number. Today we CF Electric Motor would like to explain you the difference of motor's holding torque and detent torque.

Holding Torque

1) Holding torque is also called as the largest static torque, refers to the motor's outputting maximum torque at each phase winding powered on rated current and at a static locking state which is in another meaning that the driver doesn't send pulse to motor. Holding torque is one of the most important parameters in motor selection.

2) As the result of the stepper motor outputting torque is decreasing along with the motor speed increasing and the outputting power is also in changing along with the speed increasing, so the holding torque becomes one of important parameters of measuring stepper motor. For example, a 2N.m stepper motor means a 2N.m holding torque stepper motor without special description. 

Detent Torque

1) Detent torque is a kind of torque generated from the permanent magnetic material on the rotor of hybrid stepper motor when all the phase windings of the motor are not energized and are in the open state.

2) Normally Detent torque is much less than holding torque. The existence of detent torque is an important mark of the difference between hybrid stepper motor and VR stepper motor. Because of no permanent magnetic material in the VR stepper motor internal structure, there is no detent torque.

The smaller of detent torque, the better of motor under the same holding torque.
